Automatic vs quartz — what to know before buying

An automatic watch needs to be worn regularly (or hand-wound) to keep running; leave it in a drawer for two days and it will stop and need resetting. It is also less accurate than quartz, typically gaining or losing a few seconds a day. In exchange you get a watch with no battery to replace and visible mechanical movement. If you want something you can put on once a week and forget about, look at quartz dress watches instead.
